Tragic Incident Near Khan Younis Claims Lives of Four IDF Soldiers

Four IDF Soldiers Killed in Building Collapse

On Friday morning, four Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were killed due to a powerful explosion caused by an explosive devstart near Khan Younis. Of the deceased, two soldiers have been identified: 33-year-old Reserve Sergeant Major Chen Gross from Magen Yashiah, a fighter in the Maglan Unit of the Commando Brigade, and 19-year-old Sergeant Yoav Raver from Shadé Warburg, a soldier in the Yahalom Unit. The names of the other two fallen soldiers have not been released, as notifications have been sent to their families.

In addition to the fatalities, five soldiers sustained injuries in the incident, including start in serious condition and the others in moderate condition.

Recent Surge in Casualties

The incident marked a significant escalation in military casualties, as eight soldiers have fallen in the Gaza Strip within the past week-the highest weekly toll since January-bringing the total number of fatalities since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, to 866.

The tragic event occurred at 6:10 AM during a ground attack by forces from Division 98 in the Bnei Suheila neighborhood of Gaza, close to the border with Israel. The operation targeted a fortified Hamas site believed to include a network of tunnels, despite claims by the IDF that the Hamas battalion in the area had been defeated in a prior operation approximately 14 months ago, also led by Division 98.

IDF Operation and Investigation

Military sources indicate that the unit entered the structure while providing cover fire and tank support. Following the incident, IDF personnel worked for hours to extract the bodies of the four soldiers from the building’s rubble. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event is underway, particularly focusing on the risks associated with operating in structures that have been previously targeted, which may have compromised their stability.

The stated objective of the operation was to secure a permanent hold on that territory while systematically locating and dismantling terror infrastructure.

Condolences and Tributes

IDF Spokesperson, Major General Itai Varol, expressed condolences for the families and reiterated the army’s commitment to investigate and learn from each incident. He noted, “This is a difficult evening, and we stand in support of the families.”

Raver is remembered fondly for his athleticism; he previously played for the Israeli national under-14 basketball team, showcasing his talents at international tournaments. Both he and Gross are mourned by their communities, with heartfelt tributes from local leaders reflecting on their lives and contributions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have issued statements expressing deep sorrow for the soldiers’ sacrifstarts, emphasizing their commitment to the security of Israel.

Continued Military Efforts

Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Aharon Haliva, conducted a situational assessment and approved further plans for ongoing operations in Gaza. This assessment also included initial findings from the investigation into the tragic event early in the day.

As the nation mourns, the calls for juststart and a sustained effort against militant threats remain steadfast
