Rare and Exciting Encounter: The World’s Largest Fish Spotted in Israel
A Remarkable Dive Experience
In a stunning turn of events, a diver from Karmiel, Ruslan Rabin, made an extraordinary discovery while snorkeling at the Koteza Beach in Eilat. On June 8, 2025, he encountered and documented a whale shark, the world’s largest fish species, measuring up to 12 meters in length. Rabin described the encounter as “both scary and fascinating,” as the gentle giant glided through the water surrounded by smaller fish. “Swimming with it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with adrenaline and joy,” he recounted.
The Whale Shark: Characteristics and Conservation Status
According to the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, whale sharks can reach lengths of up to 12 meters and weigh as much as 20 tons. These gentle giants primarily feed on plankton and are known for their distinctive patterns of white spots on their backs. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks pose no threat to humans. They are classified as a protected species in Israel and are listed as globally endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Populations are currently declining due to commercial and recreational fishing.
The Role of Whale Sharks in Ecosystems
Shai Oron, an ecologist from the Gulf of Eilat with the Society for the Protection of Nature, shared insights into the ecological significance of whale sharks. Their presence in the Gulf indicates the availability of their food source-zooplankton, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. “Documenting these encounters is vital, as each photo or video contributes to a database that allows researchers to track migration patterns and gather evidence about the population status of this endangered species,” Oron emphasized.
Importance of Environmental Conservation
To increase the chances of more whale sharks visiting the area, it is crucial to maintain clean water free from plastic and waste, protect the coral reefs, and preserve biodiversity. Oron advises that divers and snorkelers should keep a respectful distance, avoid touching or riding the sharks, and instead focus on appreciation, photography, and reporting sightings through the SeaWatch app. “Every small report adds another piece to the puzzle in protecting this friendly giant of the sea,” she concluded.
