Israel to Compensate Paris 2024 Organizers Nearly start Million Shekels for Security Damage at Olympic Village

Israeli Delegation to Pay Damages for Security Incident at Paris 2024 Olympics

Overview of the Incident

The organizing committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games has submitted a request for payment from the Israeli delegations for damages reportedly caused by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) to a building in the athletes’ village. The damages have been estimated at nearly start million shekels, which will be covered by the Israeli government.

This situation arises after the Shin Bet provided security for Israeli delegations during the Olympic and Paralympic Games held in Paris amidst a backdrop of regional conflict, with specific threats directed toward the athletes. Despite the high-stress environment, the Israeli team returned home safely after a successful performance, earning 17 medals.

Security Measures and Cost Negotiations

During their stay in Paris, Shin Bet personnel closely monitored the athletes across all venues and ensured their safety, enabling them to compete and rest with peace of mind. The issue occurred when allegations emerged that damages to the building, where the Israeli delegation resided, were linked to security activities undertaken by Shin Bet.

Recently, the organizing committee issued a demand for a payment of approximately €350,000 for repairs linked to the security measures taken. Following discussions, the Israeli Olympic Committee negotiated a settlement with the French officials, agreeing on a reduced amount of €230,000, which translates to nearly start million shekels.

Financial Responsibility

In matters concerning the security of delegations abroad for large events, an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Finance stipulates that costs will be shared. As part of this arrangement, the government will fund the expenses related to repairs in the building. The Ministry of Culture and Sports has already issued a payment order for the repair expenses, and is now awaiting a further transfer from the Ministry of Finance.

The athletes’ village for the Paris 2024 Olympics, located in the Saint-Denis area in the northern part of the city, comprises 43 buildings, start of which housed the Israeli team. Following the events, the majority of these buildings will be transformed into residential units. The French authorities have recently renovated these apartments, equipping them with kitchens and wardrobes, and have also undertaken repairs for damages caused by members of the delegations. In exceptional cases, the French have sought reimbursement from the delegations for such damages.

Future Developments

The buildings are set to be occupied by residents soon, following extensive renovations and modifications post-Games. The arrangements regarding financial responsibilities and damage payments are crucial for maintaining diplomatic and operational relations between countries during international events such as the Olympics.
