Impressive Performances by Israeli Swimmers

The young Israeli swimming team continues to make waves at the European Youth Championships, showcasing remarkable talent and competitiveness. Notably, Shani Goland finished fourth in the women’s 50 meters freestyle final, tying for a shared third place time. Meanwhile, Okan Goldin made headlines by setting a new Israeli youth record in the men’s 200 meters backstroke.

Shani Goland’s Strong Showing

On Thursday, Shani Goland competed in the final of the 50 meters freestyle, clocking in at 25.35 seconds. The finish was incredibly close, as she tied with a British swimmer for fourth place. Despite the tie for third and second place also yielding a shared time, the event rules granted two silver medals but no bronze. Goland’s performance reflected a continuous improvement throughout the competition, where she progressed from 25.88 seconds in the heats to 25.43 seconds in the semifinals, culminating in her 25.35 seconds performance in the final.

Okan Goldin Shatters Records

In an equally thrilling development, Okan Goldin set a new Israeli youth record in the 200 meters backstroke with a time of 1:59.09 minutes during the semifinals, surpassing the previous record held by Yakov Tsurminkin. Goldin finished fourth in his semifinal, qualifying for the final, where he aimed to further improve his newly established record.

Along with Goldin, three other Israeli swimmers also excelled in the semifinals. Lev Shteinberg competed in the 200 meters backstroke with a time of 2:03.23 minutes, Eshkol Mazor participated in the 200 meters breaststroke, finishing in 2:15.34 minutes, and Ofir Simcha swam the 200 meters backstroke in 2:16.59 minutes. Additionally, Ben Pahat made a mark by advancing to the semifinals in the 50 meters freestyle after a closely contested heat against an Estonian swimmer. He improved his initial time of 22.99 seconds to 22.67 seconds in the subsequent round, ultimately finishing 11th in the semifinals with a time of 22.70 seconds.

Personal best performances were achieved by other swimmers as well, including Yehal Cohen, who recorded a personal best of 23.97 seconds in the 50 meters freestyle, and Ofir Simcha, who improved her 200 meters backstroke time from 2:16.59 seconds in the heats to 2:15.92 seconds in the semifinals, despite finishing 11th overall.
