“Leaving in Body, but the Heart Remains”: Kankovski Bids Farewell to Maccabi Tel Aviv
Transition to Ferencvรกros
Gabi Kankovski officially bid farewell to Maccabi Tel Aviv on Sunday, July 20, 2025, as he prepares to transition to the Hungarian club Ferencvรกros. During his four-year tenure with the Israeli team, Kankovski enjoyed notable success, winning two league titles, two Toto Cup trophies, and the Super Cup, while also registering 27 goals and 46 assists in 194 appearances across all competitions.
Heartfelt Message to Fans
In a moving letter addressed to fans, Kankovski reflected on his time at Maccabi Tel Aviv, stating, “For four years, I have proudly worn the jersey of Maccabi Tel Aviv. Four years filled with victories, failures, ups, downs, and above all, learning. I learned what it means to be a part of something greater than myself, to represent a club with soul, heart, and family.”
He emphasized the importance of the supporters, mentioning, “I am not just talking about the championships or the incredible moments that will stay with me for a lifetime, but about the difficult, human, and complex moments when you were there. You, the fans, the staff, and my teammates, never left us, even when we fell.”
The Spirit of Maccabi
Kankovski shared his pride in representing Maccabi in Europe and acknowledged the club’s resilience. He stated, “When you have a real home, nothing from the outside can shake you. Maccabi made me feel I had such a home. It’s not just a club; it’s belonging, love, values, and family.”
He also paid tribute to his late friend Shauli Grinlik, who died in combat in Gaza in December 2023, expressing how memories of their shared experiences shape his view of the club: “For the last two years, every Memorial Day when I stand by Shauli’s and Ironi’s graves, I see a small candle with the inscription ‘Brothers in the Symbol.’ This candle reminds me that Maccabi Tel Aviv is much more than football; it’s a symbol, it’s heart.”
A New Chapter
As Kankovski embarks on his next adventure, he reassured fans of his enduring connection to the club: “Today I embark on a new journey-overseas, perhaps to an unclear adventure. What’s certain is that I am leaving in body, but my heart remains here. I know that when I return, with God’s help, you will be there as always. So thank you: to the fans, the club, the players, and the staff. I love you all, always. Good luck to us all, and go Maccabi!”
The departure of Kankovski marks the end of a significant chapter for both the player and the club, highlighting the bond forged between athletes and their supporters throughout their shared journey in the world of sports
