FDA Warns: 18 Popular Cinnamon Brands Found Contaminated with High Lead Levels, Risking Consumer Health

FDA Alerts Consumers about Elevated Lead Levels in Popular Cinnamon Brands

Increased Health Risks

As of October 31, 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified two additional brands of ground cinnamon-DEVI and BaiLiFeng-as containing elevated lead levels that pose potential health risks. This brings the total number of cinnamon brands flagged by the agency to 18. The FDA warns that consuming these products could lead to increased lead levels in the bloodstream.

Recall Actions

The FDA has requested that companies recall the identified products. So far, 12 of the 18 brands have issued recall announcements, and consumers are urged to discard any cinnamon products that appear on the FDA’s advisory list immediately.

The FDA has reported lead levels in the following cinnamon brands, measured in parts per million (ppm):

  • DEVI: 2.92 ppm
  • BaiLiFeng: 10.7 ppm
  • Roshni: 2.268 ppm
  • HAETAE: 4.60 ppm

Root Causes of Contamination

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, notes that lead can enter cinnamon from multiple sources. Cinnamon is derived from the inner bark of certain tree species, which can absorb lead from contaminated soil. Additionally, processing equipment, storage containers, and packaging materials may introduce lead into the final product.

To combat contamination, the FDA actively monitors lead levels in food products. In 2023, the agency initiated an investigation into the presence of lead in cinnamon found in applesauce pouches, which resulted in the recall of products sold by brands including WanaBana, Weis, and Schnucks.

Health Implications of Lead Exposure

The FDA emphasizes that no level of lead exposure is considered safe. Prolonged exposure, especially in young children, can lead to significant health issues. The agency outlines that exposure during critical developmental stages-such as in utero, infancy, and early childhood-can result in neurological impairments, including learning disabilities, behavioral challenges, and reduced IQ.

For adults, prolonged lead exposure is linked to severe health risks, including hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney damage, as stated by the World Health Organization.

Conclusion

The ongoing issues with lead contamination in cinnamon underscore the need for vigilance among consumers. The FDA’s oversight, despite recent budget and staffing challenges, remains crucial in safeguarding public health. As recalls of affected cinnamon products continue, consumers are advised to verify their pantry items and prioritize health and safety.
