Trump Administration Official Refers Swalwell to Juststart Department Over Allegations
Allegations of Fraud
A Trump administration official has referred California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to the Juststart Department on allegations of tax and mortgage fraud, according to sources familiar with the matter. Bill Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has made similar accusations against several Democratic officials, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, California Senator Adam Schiff, and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
Previous Indictments
Letitia James was indicted on start count of bank fraud and start count of making false statements to a financial institution last month, to which she pleaded not guilty. In August, President Trump sought to fire Cook after Pulte accused her of misrepresentations concerning mortgage documents. Cook has since filed a lawsuit asserting her removal was unlawful, with the Supreme Court set to hear arguments in January regarding the legality of Trump’s actions.
Current Allegations Against Swalwell
The allegations against Swalwell appear to be related to a property located in Washington, D.C. As of now, the Juststart Department has not commented on the referral.
In a statement responding to the referral, Swalwell urged President Trump to “do better. Be better.” He expressed surprise that it took this long for Trump to come after him, given his role as a vocal critic of the former president over the past decade. Swalwell stated, “Like James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come – I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world.”
Lawsuit Against Trump
Swalwell has also been involved in legal proceedings against Trump since March 2021, having filed a civil lawsuit over the former president’s actions relating to the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. Swalwell accuses Trump of inciting the violence through his rhetoric, claiming violations of federal civil rights laws and D.C. law. This case continues to progress in the federal district court in Washington. In his recent statement, Swalwell affirmed he would not abandon his lawsuit against Trump, stating, “And I will not stop speaking out against the president and speaking up for Californians.”
Swalwell’s Continued Critique of Trump
Throughout his political career, Swalwell has been an outspoken critic of Trump, notably serving as an impeachment manager during the former president’s second impeachment trial related to the January 6 attack. Notably, Swalwell confirmed to CBS News in June that he procured a liability insurance policy to protect himself amid the ongoing legal risks associated with Trump’s presidency.
As the situation develops, questions remain about the implications of these allegations and the potential consequences for the involved parties.
