Former Soccer Star Amir Hlaileh Arrested in Major Drug Sting: From Promising Career to Accused Trafficker

Former Football Star Amir Halaila Arrested in Drug Trafficking Case

Background

Amir Halaila, a former professional footballer known for his promising talent, has been accused of serious drug-related offenses. Once celebrated for his scoring prowess with Bnei Sakhnin, Halaila signed a long-term contract with Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who acquired him for half a million shekels. However, his career trajectory took a downturn due to injuries, ultimately forcing him to retire from the sport at a young age.

Arrest and Allegations

According to a report by Shimon Ifrgan published on Mako, Halaila was implicated in a major drug trafficking operation approximately four months ago. Law enforcement utilized an undercover agent who infiltrated the drug trade in central Israel, successfully documenting transactions involving 40 drug dealers. This agent, a resident of Qalansawe, had previously acquainted himself with Halaila.

The allegations suggest that Halaila facilitated the sale of 150 grams of cocaine, with a reported transaction value of 36,000 shekels. During a recorded conversation with the undercover agent, Halaila allegedly assured him, “Everything is fine. Did you check the drugs?” As he attempted to make a comeback in his football career, Halaila was taken into custody.

Details of the Investigation

Sources close to Halaila expressed surprise at his arrest, indicating that he was baffled by how his future could unravel so drastically. Reports also indicate that during questioning, Halaila allegedly threatened the undercover agent, stating, “Be careful with your son.” While he denied the allegations against him, he later invoked his right to remain silent. Halaila did, however, acknowledge knowing the undercover agent, framing their relationship as business-related.

The Central District Prosecutor’s Offstart subsequently filed serious charges against Halaila and other involved parties, citing offenses such as drug trafficking, attempted drug trafficking, and intimidation.

Legal Proceedings

Halaila’s defense attorneys, Amit Shlef and Carmel Batto, argued for his release to house arrest, contending that he is not a drug dealer and has been adversely affected by recent challenges. They stated, “The crisis has led him to unhealthy places. Amir knows nothing besides football; it was the center of his life.”

Prosecutors opposed Halaila’s release, asserting the potential risk of recidivism given the severity of the charges. In the latest court ruling, the judge decided to grant Halaila conditional release to house arrest with an electronic monitor, stipulating that any violation of his release conditions could result in his continued detention until the legal proceedings conclude.

This case highlights a troubling shift for a player once considered a rising star in Israeli football, further underscoring the severe consequences of drug-related criminal activities.
