Wisconsin Woman Who Stabbed Classmate to Please Slender Man Recaptured
Escape from Monitoring
Morgan Geyser, a 23-year-old Wisconsin woman known for her involvement in a high-profile stabbing case nearly a decade ago, was captured in Illinois following her escape from a group home. Geyser went missing after cutting off her monitoring bracelet, with Madison city officials reporting her last sighting around 8 p.m. on Saturday, alongside an adult acquaintance.
Background of the Case
In May 2014, Geyser, along with her friend Anissa Weier, attacked their classmate Payton Leutner, stabbing her 19 times. The girls, who were 12 at the time, claimed they were attempting to appease the fictional horror character Slender Man. Their heinous act took place after a sleepover as they lured Leutner to a secluded park in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Both Geyser and Weier fled the scene but were apprehended shortly thereafter on Interstate 94.
Legal Proceedings
Geyser pleaded guilty in 2017 to attempted first-degree intentional homicide but contended that she was not responsible due to mental illness. A Waukesha County Circuit Judge subsequently committed her to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute for a 40-year term. Weier also claimed mental illness during her trial and was sentenced to 25 years in a mental hospital, where she was released in 2021 on the condition that she live with her father and wear a GPS monitor.
Current Situation
After spending seven years in the mental health facility, Geyser was released earlier this year, having reportedly demonstrated significant progress in managing her mental health. However, her recent actions have raised concerns about her stability and compliance with the conditions of her release.
As the situation develops, authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding Geyser’s whereabouts prior to her capture. The case continues to draw attention not only due to its shocking nature but also as a poignant reminder of the complexities of mental health issues and juvenile crime.
