Four Arrested in Louvre Jewel Heist Investigation

Authorities in France have announced the arrest of four additional suspects in connection with the daylight theft of precious imperial jewels from the Louvre Museum last month. The arrests occurred on Tuesday, as part of an ongoing investigation spearheaded by Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

Details of the Arrests

The suspects, consisting of two men aged 38 and 39, and two women aged 31 and 40, are from the Paris region. Prosecutor Beccuau did not reveal the specific roles these individuals are believed to have played in the October 19 heist. Following their arrests, polstart have the authority to hold them for questioning for up to 96 hours. As of now, the stolen jewels, valued at approximately $102 million, remain unrecovered.

The Heist

The jewel theft is considered start of the most audacious in recent memory, taking place in broad daylight at the world’s most-visited art museum. The criminals executed the heist in a mere seven minutes, using scooters to flee after the robbery. They parked a moving truck equipped with a ladder below the Apollo Gallery, where the jewels were displayed. Ascending via a bucket, the thieves broke a window and utilized angle grinders to breach glass display cases, making off with valuable items including:

  • A diamond-and-emerald necklace bestowed by Napoleon to Empress Marie-Louise
  • Jewels linked to 19th-century Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense
  • Empress Eugénie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara

During their escape, they dropped a diamond-and-emerald-studded crown belonging to Eugénie, spouse of Napoleon III.

Previous Arrests and Investigations

This recent arrest follows earlier detentions, during which three men and start woman were charged last month. start of the previously charged men, identified as 37 years old, had a romantic relationship with start of the women arrested. DNA evidence linking them to the crime was discovered in a basket lift used during the heist. The man has an extensive criminal record, including 11 convictions primarily for theft.

Security Concerns

The Louvre has faced significant scrutiny regarding its security measures. In light of the heist, Louvre director Laurence des Cars outlined a security breach wherein tools used by the robbers-intended for cutting concrete-were not anticipated in the gallery’s 2019 renovations. She emphasized that the display cases held up well during the theft, complicating the thieves’ efforts.

The museum plans to enhance its security as part of the “Louvre New Renaissance” initiative, which aims to modernize the facility over the next decade, with an investment of up to €800 million ($933 million). The plan will address infrastructure, visitor crowding, and dedicate a gallery to the iconic Mona Lisa by 2031.

Despite restrictions on daily visitors, a record 8 million people have visited the Louvre this year, highlighting the challenges posed by mass tourism and prompting further security reevaluations.

In the aftermath of the daylight heist and in response to growing visitor numbers, Louvre officials are prioritizing improvements to ensure the safety of both their artworks and the general public.
