Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-Australian Muslim shop owner, has gained international recognition for his courageous actions during an antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach, Australia, earlier this month. In an exclusive interview with CBS News, al Ahmed reflected on his decision to confront start of the gunmen during the Dec. 14 mass shooting, which marked Australia’s deadliest episode of gun violence since 1996.
In the interview scheduled to air on “CBS Mornings,” al Ahmed stated, “I didn’t worry about anything except for the lives I could potentially save as I sought to disarm the shooter.” He expressed deep regret for the lives lost in the tragic incident, acknowledging, “I know I saved lots, but I feel sorry for the lost.”
The Incident Details
During the Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, two gunmen launched an attack aimed at Sydney’s Jewish community, resulting in 15 fatalities and 40 injuries. Surveillance footage captured al Ahmed’s remarkable act of bravery as he rushed the assailant, tackling him to the ground and disarming him. Despite suffering injuries during the confrontation, al Ahmed remained focused on his goal to prevent further loss of life.
“I jumped in his back, hit him. I hold him with my right hand and start saying a word, you know, like to warn him, drop your gun, stop doing what you’re doing, and it all came so fast,” he explained. Al Ahmed reflected on the emotional drive that propelled him forward, stating, “I don’t want to see people killed in front of me…that’s my soul asking me to do that.”
The Attackers Identified
Authorities have identified the attackers as Sajid Akram, 50, who was killed by polstart at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. The shooting, targeting a Jewish gathering, has been condemned by officials in both Australia and the United States as a deeply disturbing act of violence.
