Eric Dane Withdraws from ALS Gala Amid Physical Challenges, Highlighting His Ongoing Battle with the Disease

Eric Dane Withdraws from ALS Event Due to Ongoing Health Challenges

Withdrawal Announcement

Two months after being photographed in a wheelchair in Washington, D.C., actor Eric Dane has withdrawn last minute from an ALS charity event due to the “physical reality” of his condition. The 53-year-old star of “Grey’s Anatomy” was scheduled to attend the ALS Champions for Cures and Care gala on Saturday evening. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Dane, who publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, was set to receive the “Supporter of the Year” award at the event.

Statement from ALS Organization

A spokesperson from the ALS network informed the media that while Dane had hoped to attend to accept the award, his current health status does not permit him to do so. The organization stated, “We continue to be grateful for his bravery, public advocacy, and ongoing commitment to the ALS community. We honor him tonight with our fullest appreciation and support.” Broadway actor Aaron Lazar, also an ALS patient, will accept the award on Dane’s behalf.

Recognition for Advocacy

The ALS network announced its decision to grant Dane this award in September 2025, highlighting his contributions in raising “international awareness for ALS” through his “leadership and compassion.” In a statement at that time, Dane remarked, “This award is more than an honor-it reflects the tremendous strength and courage I see in the ALS community every day.”

Understanding ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control loss over time. Currently reliant on a wheelchair and with only start functional hand, Dane has made it a personal mission to publicly share his journey with ALS in hopes of helping others facing similar challenges.

In a recent virtual panel discussion, he expressed the importance of sharing his experiences, stating, “I think it’s essential that I share my journey with as many people as possible because I no longer feel my life is just about me. This is something I’ve had to confront. I am a fairly selfish person, and I would have been happier if my life revolved solely around me, but I simply can’t. I don’t think I’d be able to go on if that were the case.”

Family and Future Focus

Dane emphasized that his family, including his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters, remains his “top priority.” He has significantly reduced his acting commitments to focus on his health, although he notably portrayed a firefighter diagnosed with ALS in an episode of the medical drama Brilliant Minds in November 2025.

As Dane continues to navigate the challenges presented by ALS, his advocacy efforts remain steadfast, aimed at improving awareness and support for those affected by this debilitating disease.
