Basketball Disciplinary Decision: start Team Escapes Sanction as Another Faces Charges Over Fan Behavior

Controversial Incident in Israeli Basketball: No Disciplinary Action for Tel Aviv’s Owner

Incident Overview

During a tense match between Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Be’er Sheva/Dimona on January 28, 2026, a dramatic overtime victory was claimed by Dimtrios Itoudis’s team. Following the conclusion of the game, Hapoel Tel Aviv’s owner, Ofer Yanai, entered the court area to speak with the officials, raising concerns regarding player safety amid aggressive play from the southern team.

Legal Decision on Yanai’s Actions

On Wednesday, Basketball Association prosecutor Attorney Itamar Lipner announced the decision regarding Yanai’s court intrusion, stating he would not face disciplinary action. Lipner indicated that, after carefully considering the circumstances, he had decided “to exercise discretion and refrain from pressing charges against Mr. Yanai or Hapoel Tel Aviv.” He issued a warning to both Yanai and the team that any recurrence of such behavior may lead to future legal action.

Lipner justified his decision by drawing a comparison to an earlier incident involving Hapoel Herzliya, which had faced charges for a similar intrusion by owner Lenny Raknati. Ultimately, that situation also concluded with a warning, due to the clean record of Hapoel Herzliya. In Yanai’s case, game officials opted not to eject him from the venue, and video footage confirmed that he returned to his seat upon request.

Disciplinary Proceedings Against Maccabi Rishon Lezion

In a separate matter involving Maccabi Rishon Lezion during a match against Hapoel Herzliya, it was reported that Rishon Lezion fans displayed several controversial signs criticizing the referees, including slogans like “What did you see on the monitor?” and others that were deemed potentially inappropriate.

Lipner concluded that the sign “What did you see on the monitor?” would not be classified as a disciplinary offense. However, he decided to press charges against Maccabi Rishon Lezion for the other signs, potentially violating Section 22(14) of the disciplinary code regarding unsportsmanlike conduct by fans and/or Section 22(18), concerning racist remarks. Lipner requested that the disciplinary committee impose a heavy financial penalty on the club.

These incidents highlight ongoing tensions within Israeli basketball, particularly regarding player safety and fan behavior at games.
