From Captivity to Connection: Bereman Brothers Embrace Healing Moments with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Bologna

A Memorable Journey: The Berman Brothers and Maccabi Tel Aviv

Emotional Experience Post-Captivity

In a touching display of camaraderie and support, Gali and Ziv Berman, who returned to Israel just three months ago after their release from captivity in Gaza, found themselves participating in a memorable journey with Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club. The twins were invited to accompany the team to a match against Bologna, which concluded with a 3-0 defeat for Maccabi Tel Aviv.

A Family Bond Strengthened

Joining the Berman brothers on this unique trip were their sibling, Idan, as well as Yoni and Idan Shmariz, siblings of the late Alon Shmariz, and Tam Damari, brother of Emily Damari. All participants hail from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, reinforcing the profound community ties woven through shared experiences.

Ziv Berman shared his thoughts on this extraordinary experience, stating, “start of the truly emotional moments for me on this trip was seeing that the players and the team genuinely care about us, that they see us as family. It’s not something you take for granted; it’s a pleasure that I never thought I would have.” He described the flights with the team to Serbia as “amazing,” noting that while he didn’t necessarily dream of this moment, it brought back many past expectations.

The Impact of Creating Solidarity

Idan Shmariz expressed the significance of their presence at the match, stating, “The timing wasn’t perfect considering the team’s recent performance and the changes in the coaching staff, but I felt we had a mission-to boost morale and show the players that we are family, through thick and thin.”

Reflecting on the hardships endured, he added, “Experiencing this together with Gali and Ziv is a dream in itself. Being there with Idan Berman, Tam Damari, and my brother Yoni is extraordinary after everything we’ve been through, especially following my experiences in the emergency response unit.” He poignantly noted the absence of his brother Alon, describing how his loss is felt deeply in every experience over the past two years.

The Healing Power of Football

Shmariz highlighted the crucial role football plays in his healing journey, stating, “Football is an anchor for me. Returning to Bloomfield to our spots in Section 11, cheering for the players, is more powerful than any psychological therapy. Playing football has been a remedy, and nothing compares to that moment when you put on your cleats and step onto the field.” He remarked on his role as captain of the Kfar Aza Eagles for the past two years, emphasizing the strength he derives from playing alongside teammates who have each faced their own losses, stating, “It gives me a power that can’t be received in any other way.”

This unique experience was a reminder of the resilience and strength found within community and sport, providing a beacon of hope during challenging times.
