Senior Adviser to Khamenei: “We Refuse to Transfer Enriched Uranium”
Iran’s Stance on Enriched Uranium Transfer
Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has emphatically stated that Iran will not transfer enriched uranium out of the country. Speaking in an interview published by the Al-Mayadeen network, Shamkhani emphasized that the current level of uranium enrichment is intended for defensive purposes rather than for the development of nuclear weapons. He warned of potential regional war as tensions escalate.
Nuclear Program Justification
In his remarks, Shamkhani described Iran’s nuclear program as peaceful. He claimed that while the enrichment level currently stands at 60%, it could be reduced to 20% if other parties express concerns. However, he insisted that any such reduction would come at a cost to those expressing such concerns. He reiterated that the goal of enriching uranium to this level is primarily to counter “the schemes of enemies” and to set the stage for dialogue, confirming that Iran has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons and that a fatwa prohibiting such development remains in effect.
Focus on Negotiations with the United States
Shamkhani indicated that Iran’s diplomatic efforts are currently concentrated solely on negotiations with the United States. He pointed out that Europe has shown an inability to act effectively since former U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear agreement in 2018. Shamkhani expressed a willingness for both direct and indirect meetings with U.S. officials but laid down clear conditions: any negotiations must occur in an environment free of threats and should be confined to the nuclear issue. He suggested that if preliminary agreements are reached in indirect discussions, the path may open for direct talks.
Warning of Regional Warfare
Addressing the threats of military actions, Shamkhani cautistartd that any future confrontation would escalate into a broader regional conflict due to the military presence of adversaries throughout the area. He stated that Iran does not differentiate between the United States and Israel, asserting that any U.S. attack would lead to a response targeting Israel. “If America attacks, Israel will invariably be a partner, and we must respond proportionally,” affirmed Shamkhani, noting that Iran would react “measure for measure.”
This situation continues to develop, and the implications for regional stability remain significant, calling for ongoing attention to Iran’s actions and international responses.
