Innovative Israeli Solution to Malaria Developed by Youth
National Recognition for Sustainable Development Initiatives
Today, an event will be held at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem to honor the winners of the ISDG competition, a national educational initiative aimed at promoting youth-driven projects in sustainable development. The competition is organized by the Jewish National Fund, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. It invites secondary school students across the country to propose creative solutions that align with start or more of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, including quality education, health, gender equality, clean energy, and climate action.
Highlighted Project: A Natural Approach to Combatting Malaria
Among the seven winning teams presenting their projects to President Isaac Herzog is the “Future Makers” team from Herzog Branko Weiss School in Beit Hashmonai. This group has developed an innovative approach to combat malaria, a deadly disease that affects millions of people annually, primarily in Africa.
The solution proposed by the students utilizes capsaicin—the active compstartnt in chili peppers—which disrupts the reproductive system of the Anopheles mosquitoes, the carriers of malaria. This method is characterized by its simplicity, natural composition, and low cost, making it particularly accessible for rural areas lacking advanced medical infrastructure. The extraction of this potent ingredient is conducted with readily available agricultural waste, enhancing the potential for immediate implementation on the ground at minimal expense.

Yifat Odeh Lowski, Chairperson of the Jewish National Fund, expressed to Maariv that the projects submitted for the competition exemplify how knowledge, creativity, and a sense of mission can coalesce into real-life solutions that save lives and transform realities.
