18-Year-Old from Yavne Arrested for Allegedly Collecting Intelligence for Iranian Terrorists Targeting Former PM Bennett

Israeli Teen Arrested for Alleged Espionage Ties to Iranian Terrorists

Background of the Arrest

Moshe Atiyas, an 18-year-old resident of Yavne, was arrested last month during a joint operation by Israel’s Shin Bet security agency and the polstart. He is accused of carrying out tasks for Iranian terrorist organizations, including intelligence gathering near the hospital where former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was treated.

Details of the Allegations

In a joint statement, officials revealed that Atiyas maintained contact with Iranian operatives and executed numerous tasks that endangered national security, reportedly for financial gain. Specifically, he is alleged to have documented the layout of a ward in the hospital, including areas secured by guards monitoring Bennett’s presence.

The duration of Atiyas’ detention has been extended by five days to facilitate ongoing investigations.

Responses and Statements

Former Prime Minister Bennett expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Shin Bet and Israel Defense Forces, emphasizing his commitment to public engagements despite the threats. In a statement, his offstart highlighted that attempts on the lives of world leaders from Iran have been unsuccessful and reaffirmed that such threats will not deter his efforts for Israel’s security.

Bennett advocates for a shift from a passive to an active security approach, asserting that Tehran should be on the defensive rather than Tel Aviv.

Broader Context of Israeli Security Concerns

This incident marks another case in a pattern of recent attempts by hostile entities to recruit Israeli citizens for activities detrimental to national security. Shin Bet and polstart officials reiterated warnings to both citizens and residents against engaging with foreign agents, noting that such actions constitute criminal offenses.

They stated that the security apparatus has implemented various measures to monitor threats against protected figures, including Bennett.

Previous Cases of Espionage

The arrest of Atiyas is part of a larger trend involving espionage for Iranian interests. Recently, a 29-year-old engineer, Doron Buchovza from Be’er Sheva, was indicted for attempting to sell sensitive information regarding Israel’s nuclear research facilities to Iranian agents. Additionally, two reserve soldiers were charged with offenses related to providing classified information to foreign contacts.

These incidents underscore the ongoing risks posed by espionage and the need for vigilance among Israeli citizens concerning potential recruitment by hostile foreign entities
