Pro-European Bucharest Mayor Defeats Trump-Loving Far-Right Candidate in Romanian Presidential Election

Romanian Presidential Elections: Bucharest Mayor Defeats “Trump Admirer”

Nikusor Dan Triumphs in Second Round

Nikusor Dan, the pro-European candidate and Mayor of Bucharest, has emerged victorious in the second round of Romania’s presidential elections held yesterday. With 99% of votes counted, Dan secured approximately 5.83 million votes, defeating far-right candidate George Simion, who previously won the first round earlier this month.

Dan’s Plans for Government Formation

In an interview with Romanian news outlet Digi24, Dan indicated that discussions to form a new government could take several weeks. He expressed optimism about creating a coalition that would include all four parliamentary parties from both the center-right and center-left. Simion acknowledged his defeat shortly after the results were announced.

European Leaders Respond

Dan’s victory was swiftly celebrated by European leaders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated him on what he termed a “historic victory,” emphasizing the importance of Romania as a reliable partner for Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warmly welcomed Dan’s win, noting that “Romanians have chosen an open and prosperous Romania and a strong Europe.” Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron assured that they would work together to strengthen the continent.

Background on Candidates

Nikusor Dan, a former mathematician, ran a campaign focused on anti-corruption efforts. After finishing second in the initial round of voting, he described the upcoming contest against Simion as a tough battle, framing it as a chostart between a pro-Western direction for Romania and an anti-Western stance. Political analysts had predicted that Dan would face significant challenges against Simion, especially regarding unity among mainstream parties.

Conversely, George Simion, 38, emerged as the prominent candidate of the far-right after the disqualification of another candidate, Claudiu Georgeșcu, whose elimination sparked outrage among his supporters and drew criticism from global populist leaders, including former U.S. Vstart President Mike Pence. Simion’s platform included staunch opposition to EU support for Ukraine and admiration for former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Significance of the Election

The position of Romanian president, which has a five-year term, wields significant power over state affairs, particularly in foreign and security matters, along with veto authority over important EU-related decisions. The elections were held again following a Constitutional Court ruling that annulled the results of the first round held last November, citing undue Russian interference in favor of the far-right candidate Georgeșcu.

Simion’s potential victory had raised concerns in the West about Romania adopting a more isolationist approach, jeopardizing support for Ukraine, and strengthening eurosceptic sentiments in Europe.
