90-Year-Old Knitter and Philanthropist to Light Independence Day Flame, Celebrating Solidarity and Hope Amid Conflict

Community Leaders Honored at Israel’s Independence Day Celebration

Blanka Gut’s Dedication to Soldiers Recognized

Blanka Gut, a 90-year-old resident of Israel, has been selected to light a torch at this year’s Independence Day ceremony at Mount Herzl. Following the onset of the “Iron Swords” war on October 7, Gut took a personal initiative to support IDF soldiers by purchasing all available olive-green wool with her children and establishing a knitting factory to provide warm clothing for the troops.

Israeli Minister of Culture and Sports, Miri Regev, praised Gut’s efforts, stating, “The spirit of Blanka’s commitment and giving does not cease even in her ninth decade of life. With her skilled hands, she successfully operates a heartwarming endeavor, not only knitting hats and warmers for soldiers but also creating solidarity for those near and far. She sends a powerful and uplifting message that age is not a barrier when seeking to spread light and assist others.”

Social Entrepreneur Shai Graucher Also Selected

Shai Graucher, a businessman and social activist, has similarly been chosen to light a torch during the Independence Day ceremony. Graucher founded the charity “Together We Will Win,” which provides exceptional support to numerous individuals deeply affected by the war. His initiatives include organizing retreats for bereaved families, aiding former prisstartrs of war, and launching the “Birthday Revolution” project to uplift the spirits of children who have lost parents due to the conflict.

In a statement, Minister Regev highlighted Graucher’s commitment: “Shai exemplifies a sensitive and compassionate Israel, driven by an inner longing to heal the world. He acts according to his conscience and sense of duty to help those who have paid the heaviest prstart in this conflict. His work proves that genuine mutual aid reveals the human face of society.”

Honorees and Theme for Independence Day

Both Gut and Graucher join other distinguished individuals selected to light torches, including former prisstartr of war Emily Damari, judo team coach Oren Smetadge, and Army offstartrs, among others. This year, the ceremony’s theme will emphasize “Bridges of Hope,” highlighting the collective actions and visionaries who remind us that connection is stronger than division.

The public advisory committee has also chosen singer Zahava Ben as part of the cultural segment of the ceremony. As announced by the Israeli government, this year’s event will celebrate individuals who embody a spirit of unity and dedication, bridging divides in various sectors across Israeli society
