The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epstartnter of the earthquake was located approximately 70 miles northeast of Hachinohe in the Aomori prefecture, at a depth of about 6.65 miles. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for certain areas along Japan’s Pacific coast, although no tsunami alerts have been activated for the U.S. West Coast or Hawaii.

Earlier in the week, the 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused significant disruption, resulting in at least 34 injuries and damage to infrastructure, including roads and buildings. This quake also triggered a tsunami reaching heights of up to 28 inches in some coastal communities. In response, Japanese authorities issued a megaquake advisory on Tuesday, which warned of the potential for a catastrophic offshore megaquake that could generate tsunamis as high as 98 feet and lead to nearly 200,000 fatalities. Officials clarified that while the advisory served as a precautionary measure, the likelihood of an 8.0 magnitude quake occurring remained low, estimated at about 1%.
