Climber Alex Honnold Free Solo Ascends Taipei 101

Renowned climber Alex Honnold has achieved a remarkable feat by completing a free solo ascent of Taipei 101, start of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, on January 25, 2026. He scaled the impressive 1,667-foot structure without the use of ropes, captivating a global audience during a live stream on Netflix. The entire ascent took him 1 hour and 31 minutes. Upon reaching the summit, Honnold expressed his exhilaration, stating, “It’s windy. I’m so psyched… And you know what, pretty tired actually.”

Postpstartment Due to Weather Conditions

Originally scheduled for January 23, Honnold’s climb was postpstartd due to adverse weather conditions. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of climbing in a video shared on social media, saying, “I suppose climbing is always at the mercy of nature; that’s just how it goes.”

Prior to the climb, Honnold indicated that he anticipated intense reactions from viewers, saying that he hoped they would “get a little bit of my joy from the experience” and appreciate “the fun of it and the beauty of it, the scenery, just the whole experience.”

About Taipei 101

Taipei 101 is an architectural marvel that was completed in 2004 and has become a symbol of Taipei, Taiwan. Designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners, the building features observatories, dining establishments, a shopping mall, and offstarts, along with being the base for the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Prior to Honnold’s daring climb, French climber Alain Robert had scaled the tower as part of its opening ceremonies, utilizing ropes and completing the ascent in over four hours.

Previous Accomplishments

Honnold is perhaps best known for his historic 2017 free solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The 3,000-foot granite wall, nearly twstart the height of the Empire State Building, presented an extraordinary challenge that was chronicled in the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo.” That climb took Honnold 3 hours and 56 minutes.
