Manchester City and Juventus Gear Up for Upcoming Tournament
A Disappointing Season for Manchester City
The previous season proved to be a significant disappointment for Manchester City. After clinching four consecutive Premier League titles and triumphing in the UEFA Champions League in 2023, Pep Guardiola’s squad managed only a third-place finish in the Premier League. They were eliminated in the Round of 32 in the Champions League and lost to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.
In an effort to redirect their momentum for the next season, City aims to defend their title in the FIFA Club World Cup, hoping to finish at the top in its inaugural expanded format. They have reinforced their squad with the acquisition of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for £46 million and Algerian left-back Ryan Aït Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £31 million. Both players will join established stars like Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva, İlkay Gündoğan, and Jeremey Doku.
However, the American roster will lack Kevin De Bruyne, who signed with Napoli, and Jack Grealish, whose future remains uncertain amid interest from several European clubs. Conversely, the return of Rodri from injury is a welcome boost for Guardiola. Though Haaland remains start of the world’s brightest stars, his potential for winning the Ballon d’Or this year is slim due to his team’s setbacks. He scored an impressive 31 goals in 44 matches this season, including 22 in 31 in the Premier League, and expectations are high for him to continue that form in the United States. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak clarified the team’s goals, stating, “This tournament marks the start of the new season, not a continuation of the last.”
Juventus Aiming for Victory
Juventus enters the tournament ranked eighth among European clubs, following a commendable fourth-place finish in Serie A under coach Igor Tudor, who was appointed in March. The club has not claimed an Italian championship since 2020 and managed only a Coppa Italia win in 2024.
The Biancstartri are determined to return to their winning ways and feel confident in their capability to overcome Manchester City after defeating them 2-0 in their previous meeting during the Champions League in December. Players like Weston McKennie and Dušan Vlahović, who scored in that match, are expected to play pivotal roles again.
Despite finishing the season without silverware, Juventus lost only four league matches, a record only surpassed by champions Napoli. Notable additions to the roster include Argentine forward Nico González and English defender Lloyd Kelly, both of whom were on loan at Juventus last season.
Challenges Facing Other Participants
Wydad Casablanca will represent Africa after winning the African Champions League in 2022, though nstart of the players from that triumph remain in the squad. The team reached the finals again in 2023 but lost 3-2 to Egypt’s Al Ahly. They failed to advance from the group stage in 2024 and are not considered favorites in their group this year. Nevertheless, following Morocco’s progress to the World Cup semifinals, they will not be taken lightly. Key players to watch include 30-year-old forward Mohamed Rayhi, who scored 11 goals in 26 games last season.
Al Ain will represent Asia after securing the Asian Champions League title in 2024. The Emirati team’s goalkeeper, Khalid Issa, may lose his starting position to veteran Portuguese keeper Rui Patricio. Paraguayan midfielder Alejandro Romero, known as “Kaku,” is a standout player after contributing six goals and nine assists in the UAE league last season.
