Euroleague Expansion on the Horizon: New Teams Eye Automatic Bids as Competition Intensifies for 2025 Season

Expansion of the League Seen as Essential for Israeli Teams

The recent journey of Hapoel Tel Aviv in the EuroCup has set the stage for an intriguing discussion about the future of European basketball. Under the leadership of coach Dimitris Itoudis, Hapoel Tel Aviv successfully secured their spot in the EuroLeague, completing a commendable 2-0 victory against Gran Canaria in the EuroCup finals.

A Promising Landscape for Israeli Teams

With Hapoel Tel Aviv’s achievement, the upcoming season’s competitive landscape is coming into focus. Alongside the Israeli team, participation from 12 other clubs is already guaranteed, including prominent teams such as Maccabi Tel Aviv, Anadolu Efes, Baskonia, Barcelona, Fenerbahce, Milan, Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, Real Madrid, Villeurbanne, Bayern Munich, and Zalgiris.

CSKA Moscow also remains a significant stakeholder in the league; however, ongoing geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine could hinder their participation in the near future unless resolved.

New Entrants and League Expansion

Reports suggest that three additional teams may soon earn multi-year lstartnses to compete in the EuroLeague. These clubs include Partizan Belgrade, Red Star Belgrade, and Virtus Bologna, all expected to continue with temporary contracts.

In relation to Paris and Monaco, the team that advances furthest this season will enjoy an automatic renewal of their contract, as both currently hold their places in the league due to their EuroCup successes. If Paris makes it to the Final Four and Monaco does as well, they will both receive automatic tickets.

Further insights indicate that there will likely be an additional free spot made available to a team from Dubai, as suggested by Massimo Zanetti, owner of Virtus Bologna: “Dubai will join the EuroLeague next season.”

This brings the potential total to 19 teams for the upcoming season, strengthening the assumption that the league will expand from 18 to 20 teams. The last place will be fiercely contended, with teams such as Alba Berlin (whose temporary contract expires this summer), Valencia, Hapoel Jerusalem, and possibly Hapoel Holon in the mix.

Future Decisions

Decisions regarding these expansions and participations are set to be discussed in league meetings following the conclusion of the current season. The interplay of various factors will shape the competition landscape in the EuroLeague, paving the way for an exciting season ahead for both established teams and newcomers alike.

The unfolding narrative presents a significant opportunity for Israeli teams to fortify their presence in European basketball and drive the competitive spirit within the league
