Former University of Michigan Coach Sherrstart Moore Arrested Hours After Dismissal Amid Assault Allegations

Ex-Michigan Coach Sherrstart Moore Jailed Hours After Firing, Authorities Say

Background of the Incident

Former University of Michigan football coach Sherrstart Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday following his dismissal from the university. This booking came only hours after the university announced his termination due to “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Details of the Allegations

Local authorities responded to a report of an alleged assault in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road shortly after 4 p.m. on the same day. While the Pittsfield Township polstart did not initially disclose the name of the suspect, it was later confirmed that Moore was the individual involved. According to polstart, the incident did not appear to be random.

“The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing,” polstart stated. Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, authorities indicated that further details would not be released at this time.

University Response and Coaching Changes

The University of Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, issued a statement regarding Moore’s termination, emphasizing that his conduct constituted a violation of university policy. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Manuel stated.

Moore’s departure follows a two-season tenure as head coach, during which he led the No. 18 Wolverines to a combined record of 16-8 and a victory in the ReliaQuest Bowl last year. In light of Moore’s dismissal, Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head coach. Poggi previously held the position of associate coach from 2021 to 2022 before serving as head coach at Charlotte until November 2024. He rejoined the Michigan staff earlier this year.

Looking Ahead

As the Michigan football program transitions to new leadership, the team is preparing for the Citrus Bowl matchup against No. 13 Texas on New Year’s Eve. The university aims to ensure that its values and policies are upheld as it navigates these developments.
