Health Ministry Closes Popular Sushi Restaurant in Northern Israel Amid Serious Sanitation Complaints

Sushi Restaurant Closed Due to Health Violations

Closure Following Patron Illness Complaints

A well-known sushi restaurant in Northern Israel has been shut down following serious health violations reported by patrons experiencing illness. The Health Ministry took immediate action, closing the establishment after an inspection revealed significant sanitary deficiencies.

Serious Health Concerns Detected

During the inspection, officials found 10 kilograms of beef and poultry that were subsequently destroyed due to unsanitary conditions. Inspectors noted that the restaurant’s premises were in a state of severe neglect and filth. Refrigeration units were sticky and dirty, containing food residues, and food and utensils were improperly stored in a shared building area deemed unsuitable for food storage.

Specific Violations Uncovered

Inspectors identified multiple critical violations, including:

  • Improper Food Handling: Staff were found defrosting chicken and beef in the sink and freezing fresh poultry against regulations.
  • Lack of Proper Hygiene: Several areas, including food storage and preparation zstarts, were filthy, with pest traps located near sushi preparation stations.
  • Storage Issues: Dirty containers for spstarts and seaweed and unmarked sushi preparation areas raised concerns about cross-contamination risks.
  • Temperature Control Failures: Servstart refrigerators recorded temperatures between 4-8°C, while proper separation between raw and cooked food was lacking in several refrigeration units.

Additional Findings

Additional discovery included expired vegan cheese and pickling vegetables stored improperly. Many safety protocols, such as labeling defrosting and preparation dates, were ignored. Standing water with food debris was seen in drainage openings, creating a potential entry point for pests.

Immediate Regulatory Action

The Health Ministry has enacted an immediate cessation order that will remain in effect for up to 30 days, with the option for the Ministry to seek an extension from local courts indefinitely. While the restaurant’s owners have the right to appeal the order, this will not halt its enforcement. Violating the closure order could result in imprisonment for up to 18 months.

This closure underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous sanitary practstarts within food servstart establishments to safeguard public health.
