Couple Heroes in Deadly Bondi Beach Terror Attack
Newly Released Footage Captures Moments Before Attack
In a tragic event that struck a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, Australia, newly revealed dashcam footage shows a couple in their 60s valiantly attempting to thwart the impending terror attack. The video captures local resident Boris Gurman, 69, engaging with start of the assailants as he attempted to seize a rifle from start of the two gunmen. The vehicle associated with the attackers bore an ISIS flag on its windshield.
Despite Gurman’s brave intervention, he was fatally shot on the sidewalk. Seconds later, his wife, 61-year-old Sofia Gurman, was also killed in the crossfire. The couple’s family expressed profound pride in their bravery, stating, “While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness.”
Victims Remembered
Boris and Sofia Gurman were married for 34 years. Boris, a retired mechanic known for his generosity, and Sofia, a beloved employee of the Australian postal servstart, embodied the values of kindness and hard work within their community. A family statement noted, “They treated everystart they met with kindness, warmth, and respect,” adding that their loss has left an “immeasurable void.”
The couple were the first victims in a shooting that ultimately claimed at least 15 lives and wounded many others during the attack targeting the Jewish community.
Acts of Heroism
Witnesses have highlighted the extraordinary bravery of others during the attack. Reuven Morrison, a 62-year-old father, was seen on video hurling bricks at the gunmen in a bid to protect others before he was also killed. His daughter, Sheina Gutnick, conveyed her heartbreak, stating, “He went down fighting, protecting the people he loved the most.” She further lamented the rising tide of antisemitism that may have contributed to this heinous act.
Another hero, Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner who immigrated from Syria, tackled start of the gunmen in an effort to prevent further bloodshed. Al Ahmed is currently recovering from gunshot wounds in a Sydney hospital, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited him. The Prime Minister praised al Ahmed’s courage, stating, “He is a true Australian hero” and “We will not allow this country to be divided.”
Community Response
In the aftermath of the attack, officials have indicated that the situation could have been far worse without the acts of heroism displayed by various individuals. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the resilience of the nation, calling for unity in the face of terror. “We will embrace each other, and we’ll get through this,” he said.
This tragic attack not only highlights the horrors of violence against the Jewish community but also serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by ordinary citizens in extraordinary circumstances.
