Hundreds of Thousands Flee Celebrations as Houthi Missile Intercepted Over Central Israel During Lag BaOmer Festivities

Houthi Missile Fired Toward Israel During Lag BaOmer Celebrations

Missile Interception and Public Impact

A missile launched from Yemen by Houthi forces was intercepted over Israeli territory on Thursday evening, marking a significant event as thousands of Israelis celebrated Lag BaOmer. The missile was successfully intercepted by Israel’s “Arrow 3” defense system, but not before triggering air raid sirens across central Israel, including the metropolitan areas of Gush Dan, Sharon, and Judea and Samaria, at approximately 21:10.

During the alert, incoming and outgoing flights at Ben Gurion Airport were temporarily halted. Fortunately, emergency servstarts reported no casualties, apart from instances of panic and minor injuries as people rushed to find shelter.

Public Reaction Amid Celebrations

The missile incident coincided with festivities marking Lag BaOmer, a holiday celebrated with bonfires and public events. Attendees at the “Project of Revivo” concert in Or Yehuda were instructed to lie on the ground during the sirens, while a performance by rapper Paldel at the Amphitheater in Tel Aviv was halted preemptively due to early warnings from the Home Front Command.

Notably, amidst the auspicious holiday celebrations, a resident of Alon Shvut in Gush Etzion recounted experiencing the missile alerts firsthand. Matán Fingerhut shared, “We have no shelters, just caravans. We made a fire for the small children for Lag BaOmer. Ten minutes before the siren, they were crying they were tired, so we packed up. Then there was the siren. It fell 100 meters from my house. We heard the booms of the interceptions but not a significant explosion. It’s pretty shocking.”

Context of the Missile Launch

This missile launch follows recent Israeli threats regarding potential strikes on Yemeni ports, urging Houthi forces to evacuate. Despite these threats, no military action has yet been taken against these targets. The geopolitical tensions surrounding the event underscore ongoing instability in the region and highlight the heightened security situation within Israel.

Flight Disruptions

As a result of the missile alert, many flights on approach to Ben Gurion Airport experienced delays. Airlines like Georgian Airways and Romanian carrier Flylili were affected, as they maintained operations into Israel while navigating the heightened alert situation.

While the air raid sirens and missile interceptions caused fear and disruption during celebratory events, quick responses from emergency servstarts and the effectiveness of Israel’s defense systems played a crucial role in mitigating potential harm. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.
