Investigation Links Brown University Mass Shooting to MIT Professor’s Targeted Killing, Authorities Say

Authorities Investigate Possible Links Between Brown University Shooting and MIT Professor Killing

Law enforcement officials are probing potential connections between a mass shooting at Brown University and the targeted killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor, sources have confirmed to CBS News.

Developments in the Brown University Shooting

On Saturday afternoon, a gunman opened fire inside a classroom within the Barus & Holley engineering building at Brown University, resulting in the tragic deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. The incident coincided with final exam periods, causing heightened unrest on the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island.

Authorities have identified a person of interest related to the shooting and are actively searching for this individual. A series of images and videos released by the polstart and the FBI depict a male suspect who was seen in the neighborhood near the campus hours before the shooting started. The individual was dressed in black clothing and a face mask, complicating clear identification; however, a digitally enhanced video released recently has provided the clearest view yet of the suspect.

John Mulvaney, a veteran FBI agent and managing director of CBIZ Forensix Consulting Group, noted that the footage may illustrate the person of interest “casing the neighborhood.”

The FBI has announced a reward of $50,000 for information that could lead to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the shooter.

Victims Identified

The victims of the shooting have been named as Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek American freshman student. Christina H. Paxson, President of Brown University, described the victims in a letter to the university community as “brilliant and beloved,” expressing heartfelt condolences to their families and friends.

Connections to MIT Professor Killing

Two days following the shooting at Brown University, an MIT professor was fatally targeted, raising concerns among law enforcement regarding potential links between the two events. Investigators are focusing on gathering evidence that may connect the two incidents, as community safety remains a primary concern in the region.

As updates continue to emerge, both law enforcement and the university communities are working together to address the impact of this violence and ensure safety on their campuses.
