Iran’s Nuclear Gambit: Will We Trade Denuclearization for Ballistic Missile Enhancements?

Iran May Concede on Nuclear Program While Retaining a Particularly Dangerous Asset

Insights from Professor Uzi Rabi

In a recent discussion on Radio 103fm, Professor Uzi Rabi from the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies offered his analysis on the ongoing nuclear talks involving Iran. Rabi expressed skepticism regarding Iran’s intentions, suggesting that the country possesses a broader agenda than is publicly recognized.

Skepticism Over Iran’s Motivations

Rabi began the interview by asserting, “I have always been suspicious of Iran; I have no doubts about their capabilities to charm the Americans.” He pointed out that the United States is eager to secure an agreement with Iran, emphasizing that their ultimate goal is not military action against the country.

He articulated concerns that ongoing negotiations might not sufficiently address crucial issues regarding Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for terrorist proxies. Rabi stated, “We need to check three things — what has been the benefit of wise men in previous agreements and how does this new deal differ from the last.”

Implications for Israel’s Security

Rabi further articulated that negotiations appear to be shifting into a space where Israel might find itself increasingly constrained. He warned, “A deal could tie Israel’s hands, and I believe this is an additional factor convincing Iran to pursue an agreement.” He expressed the hope that the Biden administration would not compromise on critical issues, as navigating the Iranian threat requires strategic clarity and resolve.

He highlighted a prevailing concern among Israelis: “Following the events of October 7, even those who view the Middle East positively recognize that a nuclear-armed Iran poses an existential threat to Israel.”

The Need for Strategic Pressure

In considering Israel’s role in the negotiations, he remarked, “We are, at best, observers and not the starts who decide. I still hope the Iranian ego will prevent them from signing a humiliating agreement.” Rabi emphasized the necessity for Israel to leverage intelligence and operational pressure to thwart any unfavorable agreement.

Comparison of Current and Previous U.S. Strategies

Rabi compared the Biden administration’s approach to that of former President Trump, asserting that Biden’s policy has resulted in significant military support disparities. “Today, you can describe it as a siege on the main port for oil imports in Yemen… it’s creating a dramatic humanitarian situation there,” he explained.

The professor concluded that Iran is likely to use the stalled negotiations to gain time while the dynamics in the U.S. shift. Consequently, he advised that Israel must engage wisely with the American administration to ensure that the security of the region remains intact.

As these diplomatic discussions progress, the concerns expressed by Professor Rabi underscore the complexities surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and its wider geopolitical implications for Israel and the international community
