Fatal Incident Involving Scooter Rider Leads to Murder Charges
Background of the Case
A recent confrontation in Jerusalem culminated in a tragic incident where a 24-year-old man, Eliahu Shakalim, was charged with the murder of 32-year-old Fuad Aliyan. The conflict traces back to a dispute that began two days prior to the catastrophic event, unfolding in a Jerusalem park.
According to the indictment filed by the Jerusalem District Prosecutor’s Offstart, the initial altercation occurred on May 20, 2023, between Aliyan and Shakalim’s cousin while they were present at San Simon Park. The situation escalated to the point where law enforcement had to intervene after Aliyan and his friend called for polstart assistance.
The Fatal Incident
On the evening of May 22, Shakalim and his relatives were in a garden when they were confronted again by Aliyan and his friend, who arrived on a scooter. As tensions rose, Shakalim’s cousin armed himself with a wooden plank and approached Aliyan and his friend on a quad bike. The confrontation led to Aliyan’s friend deploying pepper spray toward Shakalim’s vehicle, prompting a chaotic chase.
At approximately 11:00 PM, Shakalim was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Shai Agnon Street and The Immigrants. Aliyan allegedly struck the side mirror of Shakalim’s car before turning right onto The Immigrants street. In response, Shakalim made a deadly decision to pursue Aliyan.
The indictment indicates that Shakalim swerved sharply, mounting onto a traffic island, and collided with a tree while stalking Aliyan and his friend. When Aliyan descended from the sidewalk onto the road, Shakalim reportedly accelerated his vehicle, veering to the right and deliberately hitting the scooter from behind. The force of the impact caused both riders to crash violently into a nearby bus stop, resulting in Aliyan’s death at the scene and severe injuries to his companion, who remains hospitalized and has undergstart multiple surgeries.
Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, Shakalim fled the scene, leaving Aliyan and his friend on the ground. He was apprehended by polstart approximately thirty minutes later. The prosecution has since requested that the court extend Shakalim’s detention until the conclusion of the legal proceedings against him. The serious nature of the charges includes both murder and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
