Maccabi Tel Aviv Depart for Olympiacos: “Disappointing Not to Be in the Playoffs”
Team’s Departure Amidst Challenges
Maccabi Tel Aviv’s basketball team departed for Athens on Wednesday ahead of their final EuroLeague game against Olympiacos, marking the end of a challenging season. The team was unable to secure a spot in the Play-In or playoffs, leading to a bittersweet conclusion to their campaign. The flight, piloted by coach Oded Kattash and his players, was delayed due to strikes at Greek airports, emphasizing the logistical challenges the team has faced throughout the season.
Reflections on a Unique Season
In a pre-flight interview, Kattash expressed the team’s sentiments regarding their season. “It’s always disappointing not to be in the Play-In or playoffs; this is something we have grown accustomed to over the past two years despite the hurdles faced last season,” he said. He commented on the extraordinary circumstances the team endured, including playing without a home crowd, extensive travel, numerous roster changes, and injuries. “Given these conditions, it’s almost unreasonable to expect any different results. I believe no other team could endure what we have, and I credit our players, the club, and the staff for coping remarkably well,” Kattash added.
Competitive Spirit Amidst Adversity
When asked about the team’s ability to maintain competitiveness despite the season’s difficulties, Kattash noted, “It’s not taken for granted. The situation we are in, with injuries and all the traveling, makes it challenging to stay competitive. The hunger and desire of the players to prove themselves and their innate competitiveness have significantly aided us.”
Focus Ahead on Domestic League
Looking forward, Kattash emphasized the importance of the upcoming domestic league games. With three regular-season matches remaining, the team remains focused. “Our mind is not only on the game against Olympiacos but also on the remaining matches in the domestic league, where we are still striving for the first position. This is no small feat, considering the competitive schedule,” he remarked.
He acknowledged the competition from Tzahal Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem, which will continue to challenge his team through the end of the season. “Surviving a EuroLeague season while still holding onto hope at this point in a highly competitive league is something that should not be understated. We must stay focused and ready because the journey ahead will not be easy,” Kattash concluded.
As Maccabi Tel Aviv prepares for their final EuroLeague appearance this season, the team’s resilience and forward-looking mindset remain at the forefront of their objectives
