Mawis Chibuta: ‘I Won’t Be Broken, I Belong in the Premier League’ – A Journey of Resilience and Redemption in Israeli Football

Mavis Chibohta: “They Won’t Break Me, I Have a Place in the Premier League”

Overcoming Challenges in his Career

Mavis Chibohta is acutely aware of his fading presence in Israeli football, having fallen off the radar of major clubs. Once a promising winger with stints at Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Tel Aviv, Chibohta has struggled to regain his form, recently being excluded from the squad at Bnei Sakhnin. Nevertheless, he remains resolute in his belief that he can reclaim the potential that once made him a sought-after talent.

“I’ve faded over the past few years, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end,” Chibohta stated in an exclusive interview with Tomer Levy on the Sports Channel podcast. “I need to work hard to return.”

The Downward Spiral at Maccabi Haifa

Chibohta’s decline began during his time at Maccabi Haifa. “The first six months at Maccabi Haifa were catastrophic. I didn’t recognize myself-I lacked confidence and was trying too hard,” he recalled. “In the second year, I felt better football-wise, but then came a downward trajectory due to incorrect decisions, and that led to further decline.”

Difficult Times at Hapoel Tel Aviv

His tenure at Hapoel Tel Aviv started positively, with the team initially performing well, reaching fourth place. However, external factors, including conflict and internal changes, negatively impacted the squad’s dynamics. “We all got buried, myself included, and it became very difficult to get out of that situation,” he said.

Chibohta expressed empathy for coach Yossi Abuksis, noting that the circumstances affected both his form and that of the team. “Yossi was professional and always goes with his truth. But it just didn’t work out in the end. I feel like I can talk about it more now.”

The Split with Coach Masai Dago

Reflecting on his recent departure under coach Masai Dago, Chibohta said, “During the summer, they wanted me to stay, and we were ready to reduce our salaries. But Dago decided that I wasn’t in his plans and told me to look for another team.” Chibohta found this decision personally hard-hitting, as it echoed his earlier experience at Maccabi Haifa when he felt sidelined without being consulted.

“I hope his decision is genuinely professional, but it did significant damage to me,” he added.

The Move to Russia

Chibohta’s experience in Russia only compounded his struggles. He arrived late and struggled to integrate into the pace of play in the league. The lack of training opportunities hindered his progress, leading him to feel as if he was starting from the youth leagues. “I didn’t train properly because the coach didn’t give me the chance. That started to feel personal and affected my game.”

The Journey Back to Form

Now, Chibohta is focused on self-improvement with the help of personal training and mental coaching. “I’ve been reflecting on my path, realizing that I need to correct my mistakes. It hasn’t been the same passion; I lost something along the way.”

He is adamant about his return, stating, “I believe I can return to being that Mavis. I’m dedicated to focusing on football and avoiding distractions, and I believe I can do it.”

Looking Ahead

As Chibohta considers the next steps in his career-possibly becoming a free agent after seeking a release from Akron-he remains open to all options, including lower leagues. “I won’t rule anything out but believe I still have plenty to give in the Premier League.”

Chibohta’s determination shines through as he remarks, “No start can break me. I was close to breaking down, but I picked myself up and told myself I would come back stronger.” He enthusiastically anticipates the chance to prove himself once again, reflecting on the bonds he has with former teammates, “I’m happy for them, but I know I need to work harder to be where they are.”

In closing, Chibohta recognizes his past decisions and emphasizes an increased focus on hard work moving forward. “I want to put in the effort this coming year because I know that I have the footballing ability.”

With resilience and hope, Mavis Chibohta is ready to reclaim his place in the world of football
