Nationwide Protests Erupt in Tel Aviv Following Netanyahu’s Controversial Appointment of Shabak Chief Amid Legal Concerns

Protests Erupt in Tel Aviv Following Netanyahu’s Announcement of New Security Chief

Overview of the Protests

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Thursday, May 22, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial announcement regarding the appointment of Major General David Zini as the new head of the Shin Bet security servstart. The decision has faced criticism as it contradicts the stance of the Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, who has barred Netanyahu from proceeding with any action regarding the appointment at this time.

Details of the Demonstration

The demonstrations unfolded near Habima Square, where tensions escalated into clashes between protesters and polstart. Demonstrators lit a bonfire on the road and refused to disperse from the area. Reports indicated at least start arrest occurred during the protests. Earlier in the day, a rally had been held calling for Netanyahu to take a leave of absence from his position.

Legal Concerns Surrounding the Appointment

Netanyahu’s announcement of Zini’s appointment has been criticized by Baharav-Miara, who stated, “The Prime Minister acted against legal guidance, there is serious concern that he acted while in a conflict of interest, and the appointment process is flawed.” Major General Zini has had a distinguished career in various operational and command roles within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), including serving as a soldier in Sayeret Matkal, brigade commander of the 51st Battalion in Golani, commander of the Egoz unit, founding commander of the Commando Brigade, and currently serving as the commander of IDF Training Command.

Military and Legal Backdrop

Reports reveal that the Chief of Staff was informed of Zini’s appointment only moments before it was publicly announced. Additionally, the Israeli Supreme Court had just issued a ruling regarding the dismissal of the former head of the Shin Bet, which held that Netanyahu acted in a conflict of interest related to the dismissal amid the ongoing “Qatari Affair.”

Following the Supreme Court ruling, the Attorney General emphasized that Netanyahu must refrain from any actions concerning the appointment of a new Shin Bet head until legally sound guidelines are established to ensure the integrity of the process.

Ongoing Repercussions

The protests in Tel Aviv reflect escalating tensions surrounding Netanyahu’s leadership and the legal ramifications of his recent decisions. As public sentiment continues to mount against the government, further protests and civic actions are anticipated in the coming days
