Ophir Arad Close to Signing with Romanian Giants Steaua Bucharest as Owner Embraces Jewish Heritage

Ophir Arad Close to Joining Steaua Bucharest: Owner Expresses Enthusiasm for Israeli Player

Transfer Details

Ophir Arad, the former Maccabi Haifa player, is reportedly on the verge of signing with Romanian club Steaua Bucharest, having recently departed from Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty. The 27-year-old defender is expected to earn approximately €500,000 per season, including bonuses, as he makes this transition. However, the deal has yet to be finalized, as Arad is still considering an alternative option in the Chinese league, although it appears he prefers to remain in Europe.

Owner’s Unique Statement

Gigi Becali, the well-known owner of Steaua Bucharest, made an intriguing statement regarding Arad in Romanian media. “I said I would be very happy to have an Israeli player. I want a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob on my team. I want a part of the Jewish people. I have learned a lot, read, and have begun to love the Jewish people,” Becali expressed.

Steaua Bucharest’s Current Standing

Steaua Bucharest, the reigning Romanian champions and record-holders for most league titles in Romania (28), is currently experiencing a disappointing season. After 21 matches, the team stands in ninth place with a record of eight wins, six losses, and seven draws, totaling 31 points-nine points away from the top of the standings.

Arad’s Career Highlights

During his time at Kairat Almaty, Arad made 192 appearances, including six games in this season’s UEFA Champions League, where he scored three goals, notably netting start against Inter Milan at San Siro. If the transfer to Steaua is completed, Arad is set to make his debut in an upcoming league match against Cluj in about a week and a half.
