Oren Samedja to Ignite Flame of Honor at Israel’s 77th Independence Day, Celebrating Resilience Amidst Personal Tragedy

Oren Smadja to Light the Torch at Mount Herzl on Israel’s 77th Independence Day

Honoring an Olympic Legend

Oren Smadja, start of Israel’s most celebrated athletes, will have the honor of lighting a torch on Mount Herzl during the country’s 77th Independence Day celebrations. Smadja, who earned a bronze medal in judo at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has made significant contributions to Israeli judo both as an athlete and a coach.

A Personal Tragedy

The honor comes amidst profound personal loss for Smadja. He tragically lost his son, Omar, during the Iron Swords war, who fell in combat on June 20, 2024, at the age of 25. Despite this immense grief, Smadja represented Israel at the Olympics in Paris, sharing in a deeply emotional moment when he celebrated another bronze medal victory alongside fellow judoka Peter Paltchik.

Recognition from Officials

Mirroring the sentiments of many, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sports, Brigadier General (Ret.) Miri Regev, praised Smadja’s resilience and impact. “Oren embodies the true spirit of an Israeli champion. From a young boy in Ofakim to a two-time Olympic medalist, he has inspired generations to pursue values of perseverance, determination, and love for our people and country,” she stated.

Regev acknowledged the remarkable strength Smadja displayed after the tragic loss of his son. “Out of immense pain, he has found extraordinary strength, leading the Israeli judo team to unprecedented achievements at the Paris Olympics. On and off the mat, Oren serves as a role model and a beacon of hope for our nation.”

Recognition of a Survivor

In addition to Smadja, Amili Dmari, a survivor of captivity, has also been selected to light a torch during the Independence Day ceremony. The minister described Dmari as an “extraordinary Israeli hero” whose resilience in the face of adversity has captured the nation’s heart, becoming a symbol of inspiration and victory.

“Her steadfastness during her captivity and her incredible spirit upon returning are powerful expressions of the strength of the Israeli spirit and the hope that lies within it,” added Regev.

This year’s ceremony promises to be especially poignant, honoring not only athletic excellence but also the resilience of individuals who embody the spirit of Israel
