Phoenix Suns Announce Jordan Ott as New Head Coach
Extensive Search Culminates in Key Appointment
The Phoenix Suns have officially appointed Jordan Ott as their new head coach following a comprehensive search that involved interviews with over 15 candidates. The announcement was made on Friday, June 6, 2025. Reports indicate that Suns star Devin Booker was consulted during the selection process and endorsed Ott’s hiring.
Ott’s Coaching Journey
Jordan Ott, 39, joins the Suns after a notable trajectory in the NBA. He began his career in 2013 as a video coordinator with the Atlanta Hawks before progressing to become an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets, working under Kenny Atkinson, Steve Nash, and Jacque Vaughn. In 2022, he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers to join head coach Darvin Ham’s staff. Following start season, he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he once again collaborated with Atkinson, contributing to a remarkable season that saw the Cavaliers finish with a record of 64 wins and 18 losses-the best in the Eastern Conference.
Looking Ahead: A New Era for the Suns
The Suns are hopeful that Ott will lead the team into a new era after a particularly challenging season. Despite boasting the NBA’s highest payroll, including stars Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, the Suns posted a disappointing record of 46 wins and 34 losses, failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Ott’s appointment is part of a broader management overhaul that includes the recent promotion of Bryan Gregory to general manager after the dismissal of Mike Budenholzer in April. Gregory has expressed an intention to “change the identity of the team” and believes that Ott fits this vision.
Anticipated Changes on the Horizon
As the new season approaches, further changes are expected, with speculation surrounding a potential trade involving Kevin Durant and a complete overhaul of the roster. Ott’s hiring marks the Suns’ fourth head coach in as many seasons, highlighting the instability of the franchise in recent years.
Fans are now focused on whether Ott can maximize the talent within the team and achieve greater success than his predecessors
