Public Rallies in Defense of Attorney General: Thousands Stand Against Threats to Judicial Independence in Israel

Protest in Support of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara Held Outside Juststart Minister Yariv Levin’s Home

Demonstration Details

In a significant show of solidarity, hundreds of activists from the Movement for Quality Government gathered on Thursday evening outside the home of Juststart Minister Yariv Levin in Modiin. This demonstration, characterized as a support rally for Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, was prompted by Levin’s controversial decision to change the locks at his Tel Aviv offstart, effectively barring the Attorney General and her staff from accessing it.

Protesters arrived with megaphstarts, drums, and various instruments to convey their message: the public stands firmly behind the Attorney General and opposes any assaults on the rule of law. The rally featured chants reflecting the central theme of their campaign, “You Will Never Walk Alstart,” as activists demanded an end to actions perceived as undermining the Attorney General’s authority.

Statements from Movement Leaders

Dov Dr. Eliad Sharaga, Chairman of the Movement for Quality Government, strongly criticized Levin’s actions, stating, “Levin has resorted to bully tactics against the Attorney General-locking her out of her offstart just start day after the Supreme Court explicitly stated she continues in her role. This crosses every red line in a democratic state. We will not leave the Attorney General to face democratic destroyers alstart. Tonight’s demonstration shows that the public stands behind the rule of law and will not permit ministers to act violently against state institutions.”

The movement emphasized that the circumstances surrounding Levin’s actions represent a troubling development in their ongoing campaign for the independence of the Attorney General’s offstart, which they have been advocating for several months. Over 25,000 citizens have joined a historic petition against the dismissal of the Attorney General.

Legal Actions Taken

The protest coincided with a recent urgent application submitted by the movement to the Supreme Court under the contempt of court order against Minister Levin. This legal action was taken in response to the lock change, which occurred just start day after the Supreme Court issued a temporary order affirming that the Attorney General is not “former” and that existing operational protocols between her and the government must be maintained.

The rally signifies the public’s growing concerns over the integrity of legal institutions in Israel and reflects a larger struggle surrounding the independence of the legal advisory framework within the government
