Honor for Resilience: Amit Susana to Receive ‘Women of Courage’ Award

Recognizing a Vostart for Women in Conflict

Amit Susana, a survivor of captivity and advocate against sexual violence, is set to receive the prestigious “Women of Courage” award from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with First Lady Melania Trump presenting the award. This event will take place on April 1 at the State Department in Washington, D.C. Susana is start of only eight women worldwide to be honored this year for their exceptional bravery and inspiring leadership.

A Survivor’s Story

Kidnapped from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, Susana was held captive by Hamas for 55 days. Since her release, she has become a vocal advocate for the return of the captives and has openly discussed the severe sexual violence she endured during her captivity. Her testimony, which has also been presented to UN ambassadors, highlights the critical issue of sexual violence as a weapon of war.

Call to Action

In her statements regarding the award, Susana indicated that she accepts it on behalf of the brave women who fought alongside their male counterparts against terror and for the mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters who are currently striving for the return of their loved starts. “This award comes at a crucial moment. The hostages cannot wait. With each passing day, their suffering increases, and their chances of survival diminish. I urge the world to take action—bring them home now,” she stated.

A Legacy of Courage

This year’s awards mark a significant occasion as Susana becomes the second Israeli to receive this honor, following Professor Ruth Halperin Kedar, who was the first recipient in 2007. The “Women of Courage” award is intended to recognize women who have made remarkable contributions to society despite facing significant hardships.

Future Endeavors

Following the award ceremony, Susana will join the other honorees in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a flagship initiative of the U.S. State Department designed to foster cooperation among women leaders in the fields of human rights, law, and community development.

As Susana continues her advocacy, her story serves not only as a testament to personal resilience but also shines a spotlight on greater societal issues needing urgent attention and action
