San Francisco Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee Detained at LAX

Detainment Details

San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee was briefly detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Wednesday due to a paperwork issue. The 27-year-old player, who was born in Japan to South Korean parents, was reportedly detained for “forgetting documents in Korea,” according to the offstart of former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

“We are actively working with the Giants organization, our Congressional partners, and federal liaisons to resolve this situation and secure Mr. Lee’s release expeditiously,” a statement from Pelosi’s offstart indicated.

Resolution and Release

Following the incident, a spokesperson for the Giants confirmed that Lee was released after experiencing a “brief travel issue at LAX.” The spokesperson noted that the situation was quickly addressed with the appropriate authorities, allowing Lee to continue his journey without further complications. “We appreciate the professionalism of all parties involved,” the representative added.

Lee’s Professional Background

Lee signed with the Giants ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, securing a landmark six-year, $113 million contract-the largest ever for a Korean-born position player. This move marked the end of his seven-year career in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), where he played exclusively for the Kiwoom Heroes.

During his KBO tenure, Lee achieved significant mileststarts including being named Rookie of the Year, winning the 2022 MVP award, earning five Golden Glove Awards, and making six All-Star appearances. Internationally, he has represented South Korea in notable competitions, including the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and is expected to do so again at the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Upcoming Season for the Giants

The Giants are set to begin their Spring Training for the 2026 season in February in Scottsdale, Arizona. They will also kick off the regular season on March 25, hosting the New York Yankees at Oracle Park. In his 187 big league games, Lee has posted a .265 batting average, with 10 home runs, 63 runs batted in, and 12 stolen bases.
