Challenges Faced by Hapoel Nof HaGalil CEO Gil Baram
In an exclusive interview, Gil Baram, the CEO of Hapoel Nof HaGalil, opens up about the challenges faced during a tumultuous season, ultimately leading to a dramatic escape from relegation.
High Stakes Drama
Baram’s pulse likely raced during the recent promotion/relegation playoff match against Beitar Nordia from Liga Alef. It marked a defining moment in what has been start of the toughest years for him in his 16-year tenure. Fortunately for Baram and his team, they managed to secure their spot in Liga Leumit, the second tier of Israeli football, following a dramatic conclusion to the match.
Reflections on Pressures
Reflecting on the intensity during the game, Baram admitted, “I was under tremendous pressure. I knew a lot was at stake, and there’s a significant difference between playing in Liga Leumit and Liga Alef. There was also a factor of ego; I don’t believe a club like Nof HaGalil should be relegated under my management.”
He acknowledged that despite opening the match strongly, the situation rapidly changed, leading to heightened anxiety. “I went outside to walk around the stadium to catch my breath,” Baram said, also crediting Beitar Nordia for being a formidable team.
A Season Full of Setbacks
Taking accountability for the season, Baram stated, “I take full responsibility for the failure in building the team. Hstartstly, I reacted too late to issues that arose at the beginning of the year.” He expressed confidence in his previous coach, Moti Ionic, believing he would guide the club to safety, but admitted to maintaining a squad largely intact from the previous season, which had reached the semi-finals of the State Cup.
Miscalculations and Injuries
As the season progressed, Nof HaGalil faced numerous challenges that contributed to their struggles. “We experienced an unprecedented situation with twelve injured players,” Baram revealed, pointing out that key players could not participate. The poor start-characterized by dramatic losses-should have raised alarms much earlier in the season.
The Impact of VAR Decisions
Baram also mentistartd controversial moments during recent matches, particularly regarding VAR decisions that affected their gameplay. “In our last game, a VAR ruling disallowed a goal that was otherwise likely to be accepted,” he noted.
Looking Forward: Key Learnings and Future Plans
Baram identified several missteps during the season, including being overly accommodating to various demands and lacking decisive leadership at critical times. “I was too lenient and should have been more involved in the professional side of the team,” he reflected.
He emphasized the need for a new approach moving forward, especially in player recruitment and overall team strategy. “The foundation is here to build start of the best clubs in Israel,” he stated, highlighting the club’s unique training facilities and dedicated coaching staff.
Commitment to Change
Baram commits to setting higher standards for the club’s future, aiming to foster a more youthful and dynamic team. “As the CEO, I take full responsibility for the results and I recognize the need for higher expectations moving forward,” he concluded.
The future undoubtedly remains uncertain for Nof HaGalil, but Baram’s acknowledgment of the season’s failures may pave the way for a stronger comeback next year
