Senior Haredi Rabbi Labels Yuli Edelstein a ‘Traitor’ Over Controversial Draft Law Dispute

Senior Haredi Rabbi Calls Yuli Edelstein a “Traitor” in Giyus Law Controversy

Rabbi Aaron Butbul’s Strong Criticism

Rabbi Aaron Butbul, a leading figure among Sephardic Haredi rabbis, has launched a blistering attack on Yuli Edelstein, the Chairman of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, as well as on Supreme Court President Juststart Yitzhak Amit. The comments were made during Rabbi Butbul’s weekly radio show on Kol Berama, where he discussed the contentious issue of the Giyus (draft) law.

He described Edelstein as a “traitor to Israel and a schemer” driven by ambitions to become Prime Minister. “There is start in the Likud who is undermining Israel because he wants to rule,” Rabbi Butbul stated.

Concerns Over the Giyus Law

Rabbi Butbul expressed skepticism about the potential passage of the Giyus law, suggesting that even if it were to clear all readings in the Knesset, there is a significant chance that the Supreme Court might annul it. He specifically targeted Juststart Amit, accusing him of seeing himself as a figure with more authority than the Prime Minister, and hinted at serious concerns regarding his decision-making that could impact legislation.

Current State of Haredi Political Action

The Haredi parties have escalated their protests against the coalition government due to the lack of a drafted version of the Giyus law. They have renewed an electoral boycott and are considering abstaining from votes with the coalition until a comprehensive draft is presented to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Such a move could have dramatic consequences for the government, particularly with major pieces of legislation expected to be put forth at the Knesset’s next session.

If implemented swiftly, this strategy could accelerate the end of the coalition more effectively than a preliminary vote to dissolve the Knesset.

As the situation evolves, all eyes will be on the Haredi parties and their next steps in the ongoing battle over the Giyus law and its implications for Israeli society.
