Tragic Incident in Gaza: Combat Engineer SGT Yair Eliyahu Killed in Operational Accident

Overview of the Incident

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed today that Sergeant Yair Eliyahu, a 19-year-old combat engineer from Azar, was killed in an operational accident in northern Gaza. Eliyahu, who had been serving in the northern brigade, tragically lost his life during a combat operation in Beit Hanoun.

Details of the Accident

The incident occurred overnight when an engineering vehicle operated by the IDF fell into a pit. In a chain reaction, the falling vehicle struck another engineering machine in close proximity. The driver of the second vehicle, Sergeant Eliyahu, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident. Following his death, Eliyahu was posthumously promoted from Corporal to Sergeant.

Impact and Remembrance

Eliyahu is mourned by his family, which includes his parents, a brother, and a sister. He is remembered as a dedicated soldier and is the 81st casualty from the Combat Engineering Corps since the commencement of the conflict known as “Iron Swords” on October 7, 2023.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral for Sergeant Eliyahu will take place today at 1:30 PM in the military section of the cemetery in Ashdod. Community members and fellow soldiers are encouraged to attend to pay their respects.
