Tension Surrounds Recruitment Law as Edelstein Withdraws Proposal
Edelstein’s Decision to Delay Submission
Recent reports indicate that Knesset member Yuli Edelstein, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, will refrain from submitting the draft for the controversial recruitment law before the Knesset’s summer recess. Edelstein expressed concerns that the law would not pass in the plenary and deemed it pointless to present a draft that lacks sufficient support.
Criticism from Rivals
Following Edelstein’s announcement, fellow Knesset member Miri Regev responded with sharp criticism, claiming that Edelstein has misled the Haredi community. In an interview, she stated, “If Edelstein does not get his act together, he must resign from his position. He cannot deceive the Haredim and us.”
Edelstein Defends His Approach
In a previous interview with Maariv, Edelstein clarified that his attempt to advance the recruitment law was not an underhanded strategy to destabilize the government but rather a serious effort to enact substantive and fair legislation aimed at gradually recruiting Haredim into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He acknowledged that the law has been made stricter compared to the original agreement with the Haredim, intended to ensure that it is legally viable and includes personal and institutional sanctions, actual numbers, and thorough oversight.
Despite facing severe criticism from various factions, Edelstein remained firm on his stance, asserting, “If they have an alternative proposal, let them present it.”
The Contents and Objectives of the Proposed Law
Edelstein emphasized the necessity of a practical recruitment law, stating, “I want to bring a meaningful recruitment law. It may not be perfect in everystart’s eyes, but it does answer the IDF’s needs with a gradual recruitment process for the Haredim.” He added that the law is significant for putting an end to the issue of false identification among those claimed to be Torah scholars, which he referred to as a disgrace to the world of Torah.
The ongoing debates surrounding the recruitment law highlight the continuing tensions within Israel’s political landscape regarding military servstart and the Haredi community’s participation. As political actors position themselves for the future, the discussions are poised to impact the upcoming legislative sessions and the broader societal dynamics in Israel
