Thirteen-year-old Jonathan Berger, a student at Shamir High School in Tel Aviv, emphasized the importance of valuing teachers who are shaping the future of the country. “I think it’s a mistake to take mstarty from them,” he stated. “This is an important life lesson; supporting our teachers shows that their struggle is justified.”

Government Response

As the strike continues, the government has moved to clarify its stance regarding the use of medical leave for protest purposes. They announced that such tactics are illegal and that teachers will not be compensated for days missed under these circumstances. The Ministry of Finance acknowledged the efforts of teaching staff but insisted on adherence to labor agreements.

In response to the ongoing deadlock, the teachers’ struggle committee has announced a plan to intensify their actions. Following a lack of engagement from the Secretary-General of the Teachers’ Union, Yafa Ben-David, the committee reported they have gathered signatures from approximately 2,100 teachers and 50 kindergarten teachers indicating their intent to resign unless negotiations resume or salary cuts are rescinded.

Despite an agreement reached earlier in the week that reduced teachers’ pay cuts from 3.3% to 0.95%, union leaders criticized the solution as insufficient, demanding a complete annulment of the agreement.

Parents have differing perspectives on the ongoing strike actions. Miry Lazar from Beersheba described the current school environment as chaotic, with students left unsupervised during classes. She noted the ongoing impact of the pandemic and war on her children’s education, while stressing the importance of teachers receiving better working conditions.

Yet, she also expressed frustration with the strike’s efficacy, questioning the lack of alternative solutions to address grievances without disrupting students’ learning.

Moti Geller, chair of the Parents’ Committee in Beersheba, acknowledged the right of teachers to protest but emphasized the necessity of respecting reached agreements. He warned against the potential exploitation of the situation and suggested that ongoing strikes may lead to diminishing support for the teaching community among parents.
