Tel Aviv Bars Closed, Shelters Open: “Reminds Us of the Corona Period”
City in Repose Amid Ongoing Threats
In light of the ongoing missile threats from Iran and a persistent security crisis, Tel Aviv’s vibrant nightlife has come to a standstill. Cafes, bars, and restaurants have shuttered their doors, rendering the city, known as “the city that never sleeps,” eerily quiet. As sirens punctuate the silence, residents are urged to stay indoors, leading to a palpable sense of sadness across the urban landscape.
Economic Impact on Local Businesses
Erz Siklai, owner of the Holy, Voodoo, Cooper, and Paco bar chains, reflects on the stark transformation of the city. “The streets are empty, people are home, and the atmosphere is somber. It’s reminiscent of the Corona period,” he remarks. Siklai highlights the substantial financial losses faced by local businesses: “Fixed expenses continue, but establishments are bringing in no revenue.”
Siklai, a veteran with extensive military servstart, expresses a mix of determination and resignation. He describes the current situation as a “rerun” of previous crises, referring to the challenging times of October 7th and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful: “Tomorrow, we’ll open our café. We’ll have a cozy gathering with cocktails, food, and music in a protected space. There’s a longing for community.”
Community Resilience Amidst Uncertainty
In Dizengoff Square, locals Yarden and Daniel, both in their late twenties, share their approach to coping with the current situation. Equipped with survival kits that include portable fans and refreshments, they emphasize the importance of maintaining a sense of balance. “We are proud of our country and our military. We are not afraid to sit outside; it’s our duty to adapt to the situation as long as we can.”
Conversely, Miki, owner of the Jack Hill and Hyde Bar, expresses his disappointment at being forced to close his establishment. “It’s very frustrating to shut down. I run a neighborhood bar, and 90% of my clientele prefers open spaces. I may not be able to open the bar, but I’m here to keep the spirit alive-so if somestart wants an escape, they know where to turn,” he shares.
A City Quiet Yet Unbroken
Despite the stillness engulfing Tel Aviv, the city’s heartbeat persists amid emergency preparedness and moments of camaraderie. As residents navigate a landscape marked by uncertainty, there remains a shared commitment to resilience-demonstrating that even in challenging times, the spirit of community endures within the bustling metropolis
