Tensions Rise as Druze Communities Protest Government Response to Threats in Southern Syria

Tensions Rise as Druze Protest Against Syrian Regime Actions

Druze Demonstrations in Israel

Hundreds of Druze protesters gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Caesarea on Thursday, voicing their concerns about escalating violence against the Druze community in Syria. These protests come amid reports that forces loyal to the regime of Abu Muhammad al-Jolani are planning to enter the Druze mountain region in southern Syria imminently, purportedly to “strengthen security and stability” in the area.

Recent Violence in Syria

According to sources from Syria, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani’s regime has confirmed their intention to deploy troops towards the city of Suwaida, which is central to the Druze community. The announcement follows an incident where prominent Druze leader, Lait Al-Bal’ousi, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while on his way to meet with the governor of the region.

The backdrop of these protests includes statements from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who warned that if attacks on Druze individuals continue unchecked, Israel would respond forcefully.

Religious Leaders’ Meeting

As tensions mount, a meeting of Druze dignitaries is currently taking place, including discussions led by spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Jajri. Participants at the meeting are expected to agree on the deployment of security forces in the Druze mountains to address the rising violence between Druze and Sunni factions. The governor of Suwaida has characterized the attacks on security forces as actions of “lawbreakers,” affirming the government’s duty to protect its citizens.

Protests Across Northern Israel

Alongside the demonstration in Caesarea, thousands of Druze individuals have staged protests in four different locations across northern Israel, including Rama, Kalaniyya, ELIKIM, and Dir Hanna. Protesters have blocked roads and set tires ablaze, calling for immediate action to safeguard their counterparts in Syria. Firefighting crews have been deployed to manage the blazes and prevent them from spreading to open areas.

As the situation continues to develop, the Druze community remains vigilant, pressing both Israeli authorities and the international community for support in the face of escalating threats from the Syrian regime
