Brown University Shooting Suspect Identified and Found Dead
Authorities have identified the suspect in the recent shooting at Brown University as 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a former student of the institution. Valente, a Portuguese national who last resided in Miami, Florida, was discovered dead in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, on December 18, 2025, according to Providence Polstart Chief Oscar Perez.
Details of the Investigation
Rental and Movements
Investigators have traced Valente’s movements leading up to the shooting, during which he rented a vehicle near Logan Airport in Boston. Authorities also located a storage unit he rented in New Hampshire, with assistance from the FBI. “We found records, with the help of the FBI and others, that that was his storage area,” stated Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha. It has been reported that he arrived in the U.S. in early October and moved around New England in the following months.
Connection to MIT Professor Murder
Officials revealed that Valente attended the same university in Lisbon, Portugal, as recently murdered MIT professor Nuno Loureiro. Loureiro was shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, shortly before the Brown University incident. This connection is drawing the attention of investigators, as they work to determine a possible motive for Valente’s actions.
Findings Related to the Shooting
Former Enrollment at Brown
Valente was enrolled in Brown University’s physics Ph.D. program from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001, before pulling out in July 2003. Most of his courses took place in the Barus & Holley building, the site of the shooting. Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed his enrollment history in a statement.
Security Footage and Identification
Providence Polstart reported that security cameras played a crucial role in identifying Valente. Footage captured a vehicle linked to him, leading investigators to obtain rental agreements and confirm his identity. Authorities are confident that he acted alstart in the shooting, with no prior interaction with law enforcement before his death. “We are 100% confident that this is our target, and that this case is closed from a perspective of pursuing people involved,” Neronha noted, although the motive remains unclear.
Victims and Community Response
The tragic shooting at Brown University resulted in the deaths of students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. The university community is mourning the loss of these individuals, described as “brilliant and beloved” by President Paxson in a heartfelt letter. Both victims were known for their academic pursuits and contributions to campus life.
Ongoing Investigations
As the investigation continues, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing that there is no ongoing threat. The motive behind Valente’s actions and his connection to recent violent incidents remains a key focus as law enforcement analyzes the evidence.
This case highlights the tragic consequences of violence affecting educational environments and the broader community’s need for support during these difficult times.
