Tragic Loss: Remembering Ophra Kedar and the Call for Unity

Community Mourning and Reflection

In Kibbutz Be’eri, the community is coming to terms with the loss of Ophra Kedar, a beloved member who was described as “full of energy, introverted, and powerful.” On October 7, 2023, Kedar went for a walk and was tragically killed and abducted. Her family expressed a mix of grief and relief, stating, “We are pained yet relieved that Ophra is returning to the home she cherished.”

A Collective Message of Unity

The family of Kedar emphasized the importance of returning all hostages. They are calling for the community to come together, saying, “We pray that every family of the hostages can close this circle of terror-some through recovery and some through burial. We hope our people can unite and speak a common language of unity.”

The Kibbutz community has extended condolences to Kedar’s children-Yael, Oren, and Alad-and her seven grandchildren. A statement from the Kibbutz highlighted her dedication to work and love for her family, mentioning that she was a hard worker and a contributing member of the community.

Life and Legacy of Ophra Kedar

Kedar, born to the Gitl family, grew up in a committed rural lifestyle after moving to Be’eri with her family. Recognized for her quiet yet strong character, she excelled in physical challenges and had dreams of skydiving. Kedar dedicated herself to various roles in the Kibbutz, from a diligent dairy worker to a key figure in the local petting zoo, combining her love for animals with her community work.

Reflections from Family and Friends

Kedar’s daughter-in-law, Einbar, spoke about her mother-in-law’s love for peace and connection. “Ophra was modest and found joy in small things-seeing a newborn lamb or spending time with her grandchildren. My biggest message is that we need to start loving each other genuinely.”

Municipality leader Michal Oziah noted, “The return of her body is painful, yet it also brings solace, allowing the family and community to close a painful chapter. We will not stop advocating for the return of all hostages, as many are still held, including residents from our area.”

Family Testimonials and Calls for Action

Kobi Samarnu, the father of Jonathan Samarnu, released a heartfelt message on social media marking his son’s birthday, expressing his unwavering belief in the military’s commitment to bring him home. Jonathan was supposed to celebrate his 23rd birthday but was sadly declared deceased after being taken hostage during an attack in Barri.

Simon Levinson, the German-Israeli ambassador, shared condolences for families impacted by violence and stressed the necessity of negotiations to secure the return of hostages, including 19-year-old Shai Levinson, who was also killed during the conflict.

President Isaac Herzog commented on the moral obligation between the state and its citizens, emphasizing that every effort will be made to safely return those still held captive.
