On Friday, September 29, 2023, the community of Azzar in the Bar-Tovian Regional Council mourned the loss of Corporal Yair Eliyahu, 19, a combat engineering soldier who was killed in a tragic operational accident in Beit Hanoun, Gaza. Yair died when an engineering vehicle fell into a pit and struck the machine he was operating. His death marks the 882nd casualty since the outbreak of conflict.

Heartfelt Tributes

Yair’s funeral was held at the military cemetery in Ashdod, attended by family, friends, and fellow soldiers. His parents, Chava and Yaniv, were overcome with grief as they remembered their beloved son.

In a heartfelt tribute, Yaniv expressed his struggle to grasp the reality of his son’s untimely passing. He shared, “What I can say is that I have had the privilege of being your father for a long time. I always questistartd if I was a good enough dad, but the hearts I received from you each morning on WhatsApp were my greatest pride. I could not have asked for a better son.”

Chava also spoke tearfully, saying, “My beautiful and beloved Yair, you always said, ‘I only want to be in engineering.’ I asked you why, and you replied, ‘Because they go in first.’ It comforts me to know you died in the place you loved, surrounded by those you adored, fulfilling the role you cherished.”

Remembering His Spirit

Yair was known for his outgoing personality, deep love for his family, and passion for soccer, particularly his dedication to his favorite Team, Hapoel Tel Aviv. Neighbors noted his friendly demeanor, often asking for rides to his military base. “He was very sociable, warm, with a smile that could light up a room,” said Tsahi Levi, a close family friend.

Reflecting on Yair’s commitment to his military servstart, Levi said, “He was determined to be in a combat role and quickly became known for his abilities, operating a D-9 bulldozer with pride.”

A Legacy of Compassion

At the regional Amit High School in Bar-Tovian, where Yair studied, staff remembered him as a warm, caring individual who demonstrated kindness and support to his peers. Principal Amit Fisher remarked, “Yair was a young man with a big heart. His commitment to helping others framed his life and servstart.”

Galit Biton, Yair’s homeroom teacher, added, “He was somestart it was easy to love, sensitive, humble, and respectful. He was well-loved and deeply connected to his family. We will remember him always with the smile that was ever-present on his face.”
