Renowned Video Game Developer Vince Zampella Dies in Ferrari Crash

Tragic Accident in Southern California

Vince Zampella, the acclaimed creator of the Call of Duty series, tragically passed away in a car accident on Sunday afternoon in Southern California. The incident occurred in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles, when Zampella’s vehicle-a 2026 Ferrari GTS 296-veered off the road and crashed into a concrete barrier. Reports from local news indicate that the luxury sports car subsequently caught fire, with Zampella apparently trapped inside, leading to his death at the scene. A passenger in the car was ejected and later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation.

Acclaimed Career in Video Game Development

At the age of 55, Zampella was a key figure in the gaming industry, known for his groundbreaking work in developing some of the most successful video game franchises. He co-founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010, which was later acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2017. His notable contributions include popular titles such as Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Zampella previously served as CEO of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the original Call of Duty, which launched in 2003 and spawned a series of 15 sequels.

Legacy and Financial Accomplishments

Zampella leaves behind three children from his marriage to ex-wife Brigitte. He was estimated to have amassed a fortune of approximately $40 million throughout his career. He held the CEO position at Infinity Ward from 2002 until 2010, when he was dismissed alongside his business partner Jason West amid allegations of illegal dealings with competitor Electronic Arts. Following their departure, Zampella and West filed a lawsuit seeking $125 million for their ownership rights to Call of Duty, which was settled for an undisclosed amount.

In recent years, Zampella took on the role at the helm of Battlefield within EA, contributing significantly to the development of Battlefield 6, the latest installment in the franchise. The title has been recognized as the best-selling game of the year, having sold over 20 million copies since its release in October.

As tributes pour in from fans and colleagues alike, Vince Zampella’s impact on the video game industry will be remembered through the innovations and experiences he brought to players worldwide.
